Local Baseball League eyeing 50 teams by 2014

The recently-launched Guyana Baseball League (GBL) has set itself an ambitious target of having 50 functional teams by 2014, as it seeks to introduce the game in a massive way locally.

From as early as next month end, the GBL plans to host several Leagues, including T-ball or soft baseball for children age 4-6; Minor League (7-10); Major League (11-12); Junior League (12- 14); Senior League (13-16); and Big League (15-18).
These Leagues will be held from September 28 to November 25, after which an All Star team will be selected to attend the Little League World Series in 2013.
The Leagues will be hosted on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, with the Friday designated for T-Ballers only. The games will be staged at the GBL baseball field at Turkeyen.
During the upcoming League, four main teams comprising teams in the various age divisions will compete for nine weekends. A total of 99 games are slated to be held.
The GBL is inviting sponsors to support the various teams with their expenses, noting that those sponsors stand to benefit tremendously in terms of their businesses being advertised.
Apart from being granted naming and branding rights for the team of their choice, sponsors will also be afforded two large signs at the venue on competition days and their logos will appear on all publicity material, including the front and back of team uniforms.
Currently, the GBL has signed up 457 players and is still open to new members, as the initial aim was to attract over 600 players.
